Emmett Technique Practitioners Course 2022

We are delighted to have added the full Emmett Technique Practitioners course to the 2022 calendar. The EMMETT Technique uses light touch to trigger a relaxation response in the soft tissue of the body, and the therapist may help relieve tension and pain resulting in feelings of improved comfort within the body. It may be enjoyed by people of all ages, from the very young to the elderly and many people find they feel more at ease within their body, and emotional well- being is enhanced. This internationally recognised technique developed by Ross works well as a standalone approach but can easily be combined with other complementary therapies such as massage and chiropractic as examples. The full EMMETT Technique Practitioners course involves attendance at 6 modules (you must attend in order, however there is no commitment to attend all courses within a set time period or location) with theory and practical assessments. Again, no previous experience is required and successful completion of the course and assessments allows the graduate to insure and practice as an EMMETT Technique practitioner. Student testimony (something nice)

Just do it!  NHS Certificate in Complementary Therapy (Cancer Pathway)  With the aim of gaining practical experience as a complementary therapist in a cancer-care setting, I found my way to the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Cancer Centre in Harrogate where the first NHS Natural Therapy School is based, for the 12 week program leading to the NHS Certificate in Complementary Therapy (Cancer Pathway).  This program offered an unique opportunity to learn and work within a professional, supportive and caring team, to NHS standards, while helping people during their cancer treatments, their carers, and patients on wards in the main hospital, through the power of touch – in my case, aromatherapy massage.  The required medical and professional standards were obviously very high, and I was a bit daunted at first.  There was a lot to learn about professional standards in the NHS, about the many forms of cancer and how these impact on people and how to tailor treatments to individual circumstances and the constraints of being on a hospital ward.  However, as experiences go, this was probably one of the most rewarding professional and human experiences I have had, if not the most.  Underpinning this was the expert and ongoing coaching and guidance from Gwyn Featonby, who leads the program, and support from Beverly Harrison and the wider team, which was invaluable. “Light touch” but the right touch.  Also, the chance to work with and learn from fellow therapists was an added bonus.  Through evidence-based practice, it was satisfying to see positive results for patients.  Being accepted by medical professionals as part of the wider team supporting patients was amazing. So, if I have any advice for anyone considering embarking on this journey, it would be to “just do it”!

Complementary Therapy

There are a wide range of Complementary Therapies available, all of which offer different approaches but aim to help  emotional and physical wellbeing. Many complementary therapies have been practised for hundreds of years and are more widely known and accepted throughout the UK than ever before. Frequently those who access complementary therapies report their benefits in reducing stress and tension whilst improving relaxation, sleep problems and a sense of wellness.

Many hospitals, hospices and GP practices now offer patients access to complementary therapy treatments. They can be very effective when used alongside conventional medical treatments such as; surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone treatments, chronic pain and mental health. It is important to remember that complementary therapies are NOT an alternative to conventional medicine, but can be very helpful when provided in addition.

As more and more people receive a short course of free complementary therapy as part of an integrated healthcare approach, there is an increasing demand for these treatments to be able to continue independently within the private sector. This group of patients often have complex health issues and should not be treated by complementary therapy practitioners who are unaware of the risks and complications that may require their therapeutic treatment to be modified to ensure both benefit and safety.

For guidance or more information please contact the Harrogate Cancer Support Service Tel 01423 557963

Why are we Different?

The Harrogate and District Foundation NHS Trust Natural Health School has been developed to meet the standards of practice, and experience essential for complementary therapists wishing to treat patients either within an NHS healthcare setting or with more complex health needs. The school offers a wide range of approved and accredited courses, taught by highly qualified and clinically skilled lecturers. They are experienced in providing complementary therapy treatments to support patients with a range of complex conditions e.g. cancer, neurological and respiratory disease and have extended experience of working clinically within a range of NHS and non -NHS Healthcare settings.

Providing complementary therapy treatments to patients with complex health needs can be challenging and should not be undertaken without specialised training. However, our data collected over 20 years shows that when performed by safe, competent and experienced practitioners the benefit of improving quality of life, wellbeing and the management of some physical symptoms can be huge.

By welcoming you into the multi-disciplinary care team, we not only prepare you as a confident, competent practitioner ready to meet the needs of a demanding industry, but we are able to support the provision of specialist care for a wide range of patients and clients who otherwise would miss out on accessing these beneficial treatments.
Courses include supervised clinical placements across hospital and community healthcare settings.

All proceeds raised from the courses are reinvested into the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre (SROMC) Complementary Therapy Service at  HDFT NHS to ensure its financial sustainability. For more information on the courses and education available please click the courses link above.

Where are we based?

The Natural Health School is part of the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre Complementary Therapy Service, at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust (HDFT NHS Trust), North Yorkshire. Within our modern NHS, the most effective care is achieved through team work. We know from experience, that when Complementary Therapies are integrated into patient care we are able to deliver safe, high quality care which fulfils the needs of even the most complex of patients.
